OneLake and Lakehouse Unification
Microsoft Fabric unifies OneLake and Lakehouse architectures across the enterprise.
OneLake
The data lake underlying all Microsoft Fabric services—also known as OneLake—is fully integrated with the Fabric service. It provides a single, unified location to store all organizational data.
Built on Azure Data Lake Storage Gen2, OneLake provides a SaaS-based storage experience across the entire tenant, serving both citizen developers and professionals. It eliminates the need to understand infrastructure elements like resource groups, RBAC, ARM, redundancy, or regions. No Azure subscription is required for end users.
OneLake eliminates fragmented, siloed storage created by individual developers and instead delivers centralized, policy-compliant storage with built-in discoverability and sharing.
OneLake Organizational Structure
OneLake is hierarchical by nature, simplifying data management across your enterprise. Integrated with Microsoft Fabric, no pre-provisioning is required. Each tenant has one OneLake instance with a single-pane file system namespace spanning users, regions, and even clouds.
Each tenant maps to the root level. Workspaces (similar to folders) can be created within the tenant. Within each workspace, you can create multiple lakehouses—collections of files, folders, and tables that behave like a database in a data lake.
Every business unit or developer within a tenant can instantly create workspaces, ingest data, and collaborate, similar to how OneDrive works within Microsoft Office.
All Microsoft Fabric compute experiences (like Power BI, Data Engineering, Data Factory, etc.) are pre-connected to OneLake, just like Office apps are pre-connected to OneDrive.
OneLake is designed to allow instant mounting of existing PaaS storage accounts through the Shortcut feature. No need to migrate or duplicate existing data. Using shortcuts, you can access data stored in Azure Data Lake Storage seamlessly.
Shortcuts also enable easy data sharing without moving or copying files. This capability extends to external storage systems and enables multi-cloud analysis with transparent caching and intelligent optimization to reduce data egress costs.
